First electricity generation in Portugal | 15 July 2008

Pelamis 002 installed

As part of commissioning work of the mooring systems on site Pelamis machine 002 has been generating electricity into the Portuguese grid.  The first electricity* from a commercial Pelamis machine was delivered on the 15th July 2008 at 18:15,  shortly after being connected to the mooring system.

Ramping up tests continue with electricity being generated in line with expectations.

As work continues on the remaining mooring systems Pelamis machines 001 and 003 will be progressively commissioned on site in preparation for full project operation.

When fully commissioned the 2.25MW wave farm will be the only wave power project of this scale anywhere in the world.

*The first electricity generated by a full scale offshore wave energy converter was from the original Pelamis prototype tested in August 2004 at EMEC in Orkney.
